About this series

Campus Compact and Academic Search invite senior civic and community engagement leaders to a five-part workshop series focused on preparing for career advancement through executive search. As colleges and universities look for leaders who can connect campus and community, professionals in community and civic engagement roles are increasingly part of senior leadership pools. This series explains how searches work and provides practical steps to present professional experience effectively in competitive candidate processes.

Participants will examine the stages of a search, learn how to position their experience in written materials and interviews, and understand how to align their leadership approach with institutional missions. The series offers clear guidance on how to navigate searches, strengthen candidacies, and plan for future leadership roles. The series is being offered to members of the National Forum for Chief Engagement Officers.

How does the Forum define Chief Engagement Officer?

The National Forum defines Chief Engagement Officers as those individuals who serve as the chief executive with primary responsibility for advancing a university’s community engagement, outreach, and public service agenda. Typically, these individuals report to the university president or provost and hold vice presidential/vice chancellorate or vice provostial titles. In some cases, the university structure will house these lead engagement and outreach officers in centers that are led by directors or executive directors. (Furco & Frum, 2017, p. 1).
