About this event

"A government of the people, by the people, for the people." President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Gettysburg Address describes democracy at its core as something that demands active participation, representative collaboration, and enduring commitment. But as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, we are challenged as a country to reflect on how we are upholding that promise.

At the forefront of that reflection are college students today — who are often underrepresented at decision-making tables and misunderstood as apathetic or indifferent — and yet are deeply committed to civic and democratic change on the local, state, and national scales.

As part of MadebyUs's Civic Season and National Youth Takeover Day, Campus Compact is thrilled to pass the mic to three exceptional student voices who are demanding a seat at the table, inspiring their peers into action, and working to make Lincoln's words ring true now and for the next 250 years.

Join us for your lunch or coffee break for an honest, inspiring, and challenging conversation with students who are honoring our nation's founding by being active changemakers in its present — and in the future to come. We hope to see you there.

Meet The Panelists

Zoë Singelton

Class of 2026, George Washington University
2025-2026 Newman Civic Fellow
Student Change Agent Coalition Leader

Zoë Singleton is a recent graduate of The George Washington University, where she pursued a BA in American Studies and is now pursuing a Master of Professional Studies in Political Management as a GW Presidential Fellow. A Newman Civic Fellow and Student Change Maker Coalition Leader, Zoë has centered her academic experience on civic education and community-based problem-solving. Through her work with GW's Nashman Center for Civic Engagement, she led DC middle school students through the Civic Changemakers program — guiding them to map community assets, identify local issues, and design and present real change projects. She also serves as a Community Engaged Scholarship Course Guide, supporting faculty and students across the university in integrating civic and community engagement into academic coursework.

Zoë's commitment to public service extends across branches of government and sectors, including internships with the U.S. House of Representatives and the New York County Supreme Civil Court, and earlier work with the New York Historical Society amplifying underrepresented histories. She recently led a pilot Student Change Agent Coalition entitled "Democracy 2026: Voting & Civic Education" and recently presented to the Campus Compact Board of Directors and at the 2026 Campus Compact Policy and Impact Summit. As Zoë puts it: "Everyone has the potential to create change — they just need the right tools to make it happen."

Jamie Louis Caracas

Class of 2028, DePaul University
Campus Compact Fiscal Leadership Lab

Jamie Louis Caracas is a rising junior at DePaul University pursuing a BA/JD in Economics with a minor in Community Service Studies, driven by a passion for the intersection of law, economics, and social change. An inaugural member of the Chicago cohort for Campus Compact's Fiscal Leadership Lab — a national program equipping student leaders with fiscal policy knowledge and advocacy skills — Jamie also serves as a Resident Assistant in DePaul's residence halls, where she helps build community and supports students in adjusting to college life. She is also an active member of DePaul's Mock Trial team, Bridge Building Fellowship, and VOTE DePaul.

Jamie recently completed 100 hours as an intern with the 43rd Ward Aldermanic Office in Chicago, where she met with constituents, analyzed ward-wide data, reviewed City Council legislation, and drafted civic recognition materials. That experience deepened her understanding of local government as a daily practice — not just a concept — and strengthened her commitment to youth development and community empowerment.

National Youth Day

Across the country, young people are leading. Co-designed by the Civic Season Design Fellows and Youth250 Bureau, National Youth Day is a moment during Civic Season to celebrate and uplift youth leadership, spark conversation, and help shape what comes next.
