Description
Institutions’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is either working against or within neoliberal practices that prioritize market-driven imperatives and economic outcomes. As one area of institutions’ diversity portfolio, civic and community engagement’s role in higher education’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work ranges broadly. This session will consider how civic and community engagement practices in higher education can provide meaningful and liberatory diversity, equity, and inclusion work, examine how practitioners can ensure their work is not co-opted by superficial equity campaigns, and explore movements to align civic and community engagement and diversity, equity, and inclusion intentionally and explicitly Specific examples from presenters’ experience will be shared, and participants will be invited to critique their own institutions and practices. Learning outcomes: Understand how equity work can be and often is co-opted by the economic and financial priorities of neoliberal universities Identify ways that civic and community engagement practices can challenge neoliberal priorities in higher education Recognize how a meaningful, liberatory commitment to equity cannot be captured by neoliberal practices and priorities
