The purpose of the session is to increase knowledge of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) as an approach to community engagement in higher education. The session will explore how universities and colleges can adopt or more fully employ ABCD as a lens for community engagement with students, faculty and staff. The presenters will provide an overview of ABCD and its use in higher education, followed by small group discussions and report outs on the value and challenges of applying ABCD as a community engagement strategy in higher education. Participants will leave with a critical view of how ABCD can be a tool for engagement with communities through the lens of economic and racial equity.
 
Learning outcomes:
  • The basics of ABCD as a tool in higher education community engagement
  • How ABCD has been applied at other institutions in diverse contexts
  • Participants will be challenged to think about how ABCD can be employed to further efforts to increase economic and racial equity
