Civic engagement in higher education is often an isolated aspect of institutional focus. As such, it is siloed within a department that focuses on helping students fulfill service-learning requirements or engage in the US political system. Rarely is civic engagement represented holistically within an institution’s strategic plan or woven into other divisions’ learning goals or outcomes. This session explores how civic educators and residence life staff at Grinnell College collaborated to create a civically focused, residential curriculum that is globally inclusive and consistent with the College’s mission and emerging strategic priorities. It will highlight the intentional, interdivisional conversations, the design methodology, and the struggles related to the collaboration. Participants will leave with action items for similar collaborations at their institution.
