Bernadette Ludwig is the Director of Civic Engagement and an Associate Professor of Sociology, Wagner College.

Most of her scholarship has focused on how anti-Black racism affects African refugees in their ability to find refuge and in the resettlement process. This research has been published in numerous book chapters and journals, including but not limited to International Migration, African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal, and International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care. Her book "America's Black Refugees: Confronting Racism" is under contract with Rutgers University Press. Her other strand of research investigates how community engagement can nurture students’ sense of social justice and belonging. Some of this work has been published in the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. Her co-edited book “How to Facilitate Community-Based Learning” is under contract with Edward Elgar Publishing.

At Wagner College she has supported faculty with creating and teaching classes with a civic engagement component as well as students interested in civic engagement initiatives and programs (e.g., Bonner Leaders Program).

Her commitment to community-based learning and other forms of civic engagement is informed by her prior work experience in nongovernmental organizations. Bernadette Ludwig received her PhD in Sociology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
