As a Campus Compact Campus Champion, you are the connective tissue between your institution and a national network of changemakers, yet the role often comes without a roadmap or a community of peers who understand its particular challenges. This session is designed specifically for you: dedicated time and space to build the shared identity, skills, and network that the Campus Champion role needs.

Grounded in the concept of the tempered radical — someone who challenges the status quo from within, through relationships and persistence — you'll learn to map the people and relationships that drive institutional decisions, build a coalition of the willing around a challenge you're already facing, and craft a pitch to move someone from the sidelines to your side. You'll leave with a clearer sense of who you are in this work and a network of Campus Champions who are navigating it alongside you. We'll work through core capacities that define effective Campus Champions:

• Relationship Mapping: Identifying the people and informal networks who actually drive institutional decisions, beyond the org chart.
• Coalition Building: Assembling a "coalition of the willing" around a specific challenge you're already navigating on your campus.
• Strategic Persuasion: Crafting a pitch that moves a colleague or stakeholder from the sidelines to allyship.
• Identity and Resilience: Grounding yourself in what it means to be someone who sustains this work over time without burning out or giving up.
• Peer Network: Connecting with fellow Campus Champions who are facing similar institutional dynamics, so you leave with real relationships and strategies.

Together we will build a clearer sense of what it means to be the Campus Champion, plus a concrete map to apply immediately at your institution, and a network of Campus Champions navigating this role alongside you.

Higher education’s public purpose is realized when institutional power is leveraged to promote social impact, community flourishing, and a thriving democracy. This symposium brings together key leaders from Campus Compact Campus Action Planning (CAP), Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development, and Building Theory to Practice (BTtoP) networks for a collaborative day of strategic learning and institutional planning.

The symposium is designed to move beyond abstract commitments, providing engagement administrators and campus leaders with a practical path for integrating civic and community engagement across all institutional functions—from research and teaching to operations and economic influence.
