Name
Honoring Our Students’ Lives: Service Learning and Student Experiences
Date & Time
Thursday, March 31, 2022, 3:45 PM - 4:35 PM
Description

This session refocuses service-learning on students’ personal experiences and their definitions of what is and is not available in their communities. For example, students might choose to focus on their learning about inequities in educational systems when they teach their younger siblings during remote learning or inequities in language policy as they translate for their families at the doctors. This service-learning experience asks students to critically engage with the work they are already doing, so they learn the why behind the what in their own worlds. Presenters will share examples of student service-learning projects, the process behind creating these projects, and caveats for future service-learning assignments. Participants will use a jamboard to brainstorm experiences that might count towards service-learning.

Learning outcomes:

  • Participants will reconceptualize service-learning to lift up students’ lived experiences.
  • Participants will brainstorm lived experiences that might count towards service learning in future classes.
