Description

This interactive session will include facilitated discussion surrounding the need for participatory teaching and learning approaches that are grounded in critical pedagogy and reflect core principles in the field such as collaboration, social justice, solidarity, diversity and inclusion. Together we will explore questions such as “Why adopt a participatory approach in CEL?” and ““How might this approach help students develop the skills and capacities to effectively collaborate with communities to address critical concerns?” The session will include opportunities for participants to directly experiment with participatory techniques. Finally, participants will be introduced to a teaching tool that includes over 40 participatory techniques for use in community-engaged learning.

|Learning outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to describe participatory learning.
  • Participants will be able to articulate the rationale for using participatory approaches in the field of Community-engaged Learning.
  • Participants will gain exposure to a variety of participatory strategies that can be applied or adapted to their own setting.
