Date & Time
Tuesday, March 29, 2022, 4:40 PM - 5:30 PM
Description

The renewed effort to address systemic racism within healthcare and healthcare disparities requires new ways of thinking and doing. This session will focus on methods to teach social determinants of health through a service learning experience. Data will be shared on the outcomes of our curriculum for the medical school’s AmeriCorps program, but the lessons can be applicable to any group. We will discuss topics that are rarely covered in health curriculum such as disability/ableism, poverty/classism, race/racism, trauma-informed care, and bystander intervention. This session can benefit individuals who work with future healthcare professionals or anyone interested in the topic.

|Learning outcomes:

  • Understanding of methods to integrate direct service with social justice education for healthcare students.
  • Understanding strategies to teach trauma-informed and help students apply knowledge to patient care.
  • Ability to develop an individualized plan for how to develop new experiential education for healthcare students.
