Description

This interactive workshop will explore Bard College's "glocal" approach to teaching civic engagement where students on multiple campuses together study social justice, leadership, project development in collaboration with the Open Society University Network's international partner campuses. Students in Berlin, Beirut, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Palestine, U.S. and Vietnam take a civic engagement together. Each section offers in-person instruction with collective, shared assignments, talks, groups work and key notes during collaborative sessions that deepen students skills and intercultural understanding. The course explores historical, philosophical and practical elements of civic engagement and the underlying question of what it means to be an engaged citizen in the early 21st century.

  • Methods for teaching civic engagement/ Developing a shared understanding and explore the skills necessary to be a global citizen
  • Deepen understanding of the various contexts where civic engagement takes place.
  • Explore an understanding of the ethical implications of civic engagement activities, particularly for students who have little access.
