Description

In this session, authors of the book Community Colleges for Democracy: Aligning Civic and Community Engagement with Institutional Priorities, will provide practical models and tools developed at two community colleges (Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey and Heartland Community College in Illinois) that you can use at your own institutions to effectively integrate civic engagement into the community college classroom, advance and institutionalize those efforts, and create guided transfer pathways for students to continue civic learning at a four-year institution.

The first half of the session will feature a model and tools for developing and assessing service-learning outcomes in individual courses and across the college, culminating in transcripted work. The second half of the session will share a model for developing guided pathways for civic learning between two-year and four-year institutions. Specifically, the authors will discuss how to develop a transferable curriculum and program (that includes co-curricular connectivity) that works to make the student experience seamless and connected from one institution to the next.
