Name
Asset-Based Educational Experiences: Working to Understand and Embrace Students’ Cultural Capital
Date & Time
Tuesday, March 31, 2020, 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM
Description
Traditional educational models focus on students’ deficits to explain persistent achievement and graduation gaps for students from historically and currently underrepresented groups. In order to remove the predictability of students’ success and failure that correlate with social and cultural factors, we must interrupt inequitable practices and create inclusive learning environments for all students. With this in mind, CSU STEM VISTA aims to eliminate race, class and gender disparities in STEM education across the CSU system. Together, participants will reflect on their cultural identities and educational experiences; deepen their understanding of Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Model as a framework for embracing students’ assets; brainstorm ways to incorporate sustainable practices that actively promote inclusive, asset-based teaching and learning; and, craft next steps.

Learning outcomes:
  • Participants will be invited to:
    • Reflect on their own cultural identities and educational experiences
    • Deepen their knowledge of Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth model
    • Brainstorm ways to incorporate practices and policies that actively promote inclusive, asset-based teaching and learning experiences
