Description
The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate the ways that music can facilitate genuine community engagement that features voices from minority populations. Additionally, it interrogates the problematic nature of Western-centric music education and community engagement music programming.
 
The objectives and key takeaways of the presentation are:
  • Present an overall view of community engagement through university music programs in the U.S.
  • Demonstrate how Western-centric programming can be detrimental to minority communities
  • Define Christopher Small’s concept of musicking
  • Describe the activities of UTEP’s Layali Al-Sham and how critical their musicking is within the El Paso and Ciudad Juárez borderlands
  • Provide the audience with tools for musicking within their own communities
