Name
University & Community Transformation: A Place-Based Justice Approach to Partnerships & Change
Date & Time
Tuesday, March 31, 2020, 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Description
While the nascent field of service-learning placed importance on reciprocity and community partnerships, our current context and challenges (social, economic, educational, environmental, health, etc.) require deeper structural approaches. The latest practices of place-based community engagement extend the values of reciprocity and partnerships in ways that create the possibility for deeper community transformation, based on self-determined goals, and through long-term, deliberative, inclusive, equity-minded processes. Join this session to hear the recent literature and research (Yamamura & Koth, 2018, 2019) and learn about three different approaches in three phases of development (including one place-based initiative that is not in the same neighborhood as the institution). This session is part of the place-based justice embedded institute; all are welcome to attend. Learning outcomes: Attendees will gain: 1. Familiarity with the purpose and core values of place-based community engagement. 2. Increased knowledge of practices and models that encourage long-term, reciprocal, and deliberative. 3. Increased willingness and capacity to push the boundaries of what it means to pursue community-identified goals that foster self-determination.
