Description
This interactive workshop provides participants with ideas and resources for innovative ways that campuses can partner with local communities in mutually beneficial and reciprocal partnerships to deepen student community-engaged civic learning beyond separate acts of voting and service. Following a presentation of how James Madison University’s Community Service Learning and the James Madison Center for Civic Engagement partner on Alternative Breaks to connect service to political learning, participants will be guided through a design thinking based idea generation and solutions development process to identify how Alternative Breaks might be used to address civic needs. The workshop will offer strategies for building relationships with partner organizations and for developing initiatives that give students the opportunity to develop and practice civic skills.
