Name
Reacting to the Past: Democratizing the Classroom through Historical Role Playing Games
Date & Time
Monday, March 30, 2020, 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Verdis L. Robinson
Description
Many of us have focused on issues of access, diversity, and inclusivity---all essential to a truly democratic education. But we must also examine how we teach. That, too, plays an important role in conveying the significance of democratic processes throughout society. How can students learn deeply and be truly engaged? How can students take ownership of their knowledge and skills and become life-long learners? How can faculty be proponents of active-learning and open their classrooms to new pedagogies, interdisciplinary approaches, and collaboration with colleagues? How can we teach while intentionally build civic skills? A panel of faculty and administrators from different colleges and universities will be discussing how their use and implementation of the Reacting-to-the-Past pedagogy has achieved these goals.

Learning outcomes:
  • The goal of this panel is to demonstrate how the implementation of the RTTP pedagogy can transform learning, all participants, and the institutions themselves by exploring and reasserting the value of democratic education.
