Name
Raising Voices with Action Research: Collaborative Inquiry with Urban Community Partners
Date & Time
Monday, March 30, 2020, 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM
Description
How can we design action research to increase opportunities and raise voices of urban community partners, especially those who have been marginalized by higher education? How can we rebuild these relationships to improve meaningful participation by all? Swarthmore College redesigned an applied statistics course for students to partner with non-profits and agencies in need of data analysis in the nearby cities of Philadelphia and Chester, Pennsylvania. In Hartford, Connecticut, Capital Community College and Trinity College jointly created the Liberal Arts Action Lab, where students and faculty answer research questions posed by community partners. At this interactive presentation, participants will share materials (including community research proposals, video clips, and student products) and respond to questions on adapting ideas to other contexts.

Learning outcomes:
  • Attendees will
    • Learn how urban community partners, faculty, and students have collaborated across different stages of action research projects
    • Compare different curricular approaches to designing action research at different types of institutions
    • Gain specific ideas for potentially creating similar programs in their own communities.
