Dr. Jalene Tamerat is the Associate Director of Community-Engaged Teaching and Research at Northeastern University, where she leads faculty development and programming for service-learning courses and engaged research. She began her career in 2003 as a classroom teacher in Boston Public Schools before eventually transitioning to serve as the district’s Director of New Teacher Development, where she oversaw induction and licensure programs for 300+ novice educators annually. In the two years prior to her arrival at Northeastern, Jalene was the Dean of Sposato Graduate School of Education, a practice-oriented residency and master's program for aspiring teachers in the Boston area. Jalene has served as adjunct faculty at Boston University and has published research on various topics in education in journals such as Teachers College Record and Middle Grades Review, among others. Jalene currently serves on the Board of Directors for The League of Women in Community Service, one of the nation's oldest and longest-running Black women's social clubs and is the co-chair of the Community Advisory Board at GBH. Jalene is also proud to be a design team member and facilitator for The Teachers' Lounge CLOC Fellowship. Jalene received her doctorate in education from Boston University, an Ed.M. from Harvard University, an M.A.T. from Emmanuel College, and a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is co-author of Education Across Borders: Immigration, Race & Identity in the Classroom (Beacon Press, 2022).
