Name
Getting Students to Vote—How You Can Help Overcome the Barriers
Date & Time
Monday, March 30, 2020, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Description
Why don't students vote? How you can help them overcome barriers, from daunting laws to political cynicism? Join this session for lessons from Campus Election Engagement Project (CEEP)’s nine years working with colleges to help students register, volunteer in campaigns, navigate voting laws, educate themselves on candidates, and show up to vote. Learn how to enlist campus stakeholders, from orientation directors to athletic directors, and faculty from every discipline to create a campus culture of electoral engagement, where every possible stakeholder recognizes that student voting may well be contingent on their actions. Find out how to use CEEP’s nonpartisan guides to overcome students’ sense that “my vote doesn’t matter” and that all candidates are “just the same, all lying and corrupt,” and to counter the deluge of dark money that will try to convince them to stay home. CEEP founder Paul Loeb will explore what helps students participate in our electoral process and what stops them, and ways to give the current student generation a sense that their participation matters.
