Florida Civic Fellows Program: Pilot Effort Brings College Civic Ed Programming to H.S. Students

Description
The University of South Florida St. Petersburg and the Florida YMCA Youth In Government program partnered to develop the USFSP YMCA Civic Fellows Program. Fellows are Florida high school students who will earn six college credits in political science and leadership for their participation. The Lead Instructor and Program Coordinators will discuss lessons learned during the pilot year and adjustments planned for Year 2. There will be a brief Q&A followed by a guided discussion. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to share innovative ideas, experiences, and practices related to improving civic education for high school students, especially opportunities to connect high school students with college-based civic education and civic engagement initiatives.
 
Learning outcomes:
  • How to design and deliver curriculum to high school/incoming college students
  • How to create a varied and engaging schedule of on-campus events/panels/speakers/field trips
  • How to anticipate and overcome logistical challenges presented by a 53-week program
  • Lessons learned from extensive student surveying (pre/post institute as well as during)
