Name
The 21st Century Social Contract in Action: Keys to Civic Engagement at a Community College
Date & Time
Wednesday, April 1, 2020, 9:45 AM - 10:45 AM
Description
Tarrant County College serves the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and surrounding areas. Data from the 2014 midterms indicated that less than 25% of TCC students participated in the election. In the last two academic years, there has been a sustained and multi-campus effort to build civic engagement and responsibility into the student and faculty culture of TCC. Faculty created a workshop program for students designed to help increase student voter participation, empower students to become civic leaders, and to mentor students into being agents of change in the DFW area. Faculty took into consideration special circumstances and challenges facing community college students. Events from the workshop series were open all, with special mentoring available for those student leaders.

Learning outcomes:
  • Participants will have the ability to recreate the mentoring program and events designed to produce agents of change
  • Participants will have the data from student events to plan their own
  • Participants will be aware of possible challenges facing students at community colleges
