Description

Some of UMB's recent advancements in community engagement are actually the products of learning from harmful mistakes. Openly acknowledging mistakes can be difficult for institutions that rely on public investments and philanthropy to survive. On the other hand, public accountability can improve trust and attract support for corrective action. The presenters will provide four concrete examples of such mistakes. In the examples, participants will explore questions of distinguishing community partnerships from other types of community relationships; applying the Collective Impact framework in an organization that can be, at times, hostile to resource-sharing; and balancing the roles of a health services institution and an institutional neighbor. To maximize interaction, content engagement, and stimulate questions, the mini workshop will be simulation-based.
