Wondering how to reclaim the sometimes taboo words of "service" and "volunteering"--in all of their complexities? Join Cheryl Skafte from the University of Minnesota Duluth and Alyssa Melby from St. Olaf College as they highlight two student-led service programs: UMD Service Microgrants and the Common Good Fellows. Then the group will discuss: 1) Why is now a good moment to reclaim service and volunteering for students, staff, and community partners? 2) How does reclaiming service align with or differ from established community engagement best practices? 3) What are the benefits and trade-offs of using the concepts of service and volunteering both with students and college administrators? 4) What would reclaiming service and volunteering look like on your campus?
