Description

Defining community engagement and measuring its impact remains a persistent and perennial challenge for anyone and everyone seeking or supporting recognition of CE scholarship as legitimate and valued faculty work for reappointment, promotion and tenure. This session presents an easy to remember and articulate, research-based, definition of community engagement called OOP (Outputs, Outcomes, and Process) (Janke, Quan, Jenkins & Saltmarsh, 2023) to help explain the spectrum of public impact scholarship and the qualities that make community engagement distinct. OOP was integrated into the 2026 version of the Carnegie Foundation's Community Engagement Elective Classification Guidebook, and has been useful to campuses working to create their own policies and procedures for rewarding community-engaged scholarship.
