Description
Dozens of campus initiatives teach civil discourse skills and provide opportunities to engage in discourse. However, few institutions have developed a comprehensive strategy for motivating civil discourse on campus and beyond. This session explores the importance of civil discourse motivation and potential ways to motivate campus-wide, including some approaches currently being deployed. It also investigates how certain methods of motivating civil discourse can promote broader societal goals, such as support for democratic norms. Participants gain awareness of motivational approaches they can bring to their own campus, and how they can get involved with emerging cross-campus efforts to increase civil discourse motivation.
