Description

This session introduces a new measurement tool designed to assess students' civic character development in higher education. Developed through a rigorous mixed methods approach that centered students' voices, the tool captures their perspectives regarding Civic Identity, Civic Leadership, and Civic Agency (based on Tisch College's Civic Character Development Framework). We sought to design this measure to provide institutions with a robust and student-informed method for understanding civic growth and assessing civic education programs. This session will present our design process and emphasize how students' perspectives were infused throughout. Key takeaways include strategies for embedding student voice into assessment, insights into multidimensional measures of civic character, and approaches for applying these methods to strengthen civic learning, engagement, and institutional evaluation practices.
