Campus-community engagement is the work of building and sustaining bridges between higher education institutions and the communities they serve. But what happens when the communities surrounding those institutions shift in profound ways? In this book talk, an editor and authors associated with a forthcoming volume on navigating effective community engagement through community change (Campus Compact/Routledge, forthcoming in 2026) will share narratives that describe how institutions of higher education engage nimbly and effectively when the communities around them shift—demographically, culturally, or otherwise. Session participants will then reflect on how their own institutions might be more nimble in their engagement work both to serve communities and to address those who question the public purposes of higher education.
