We showcase the Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC) at Rutgers-Newark, an innovative model for student success and community engagement that has several implications for practice—including holistic admissions, inclusive and community-engagement classrooms, and comprehensive infrastructures for mentoring and support. HLLC scholars participate in a rich social justice-intensive curricular experience and a traditional emphasis on publicly-engaged faculty research, which pivots on established high-impact practices for student success. For our presentation, we describe key components of the HLLC model, including one of our core courses, Local Citizenship in a Global World (LCGW), and the Healing Sounds of Newark, a showcase of thematic performances that invite students to demonstrate their civic commitments through the arts.
