Description

This session will explore how pop culture and social media trends can serve as powerful tools for engaging youth and documenting the impact of community engagement initiatives. Leveraging formats that resonate with students, such as reality television aesthetics and culturally familiar storytelling—programs can capture authentic experiences while making outcomes visible to different audiences. The Rutgers Future Scholars program, a university-wide college access initiative, piloted Scholar Island, a Love Island-inspired video series documenting students' four-week Summer Academy. While playful in style, the use of reality television aesthetics allowed the project to document academic rigor, college exposure, and community building. By blending narrative with pop culture, this approach demonstrates how creative media can increase engagement, highlight impact, and strengthen community partnerships.
