Description

As AI and other emerging technologies reshape civic and community life, questions of agency and equity demand renewed attention. This session introduces deliberative and human-centered approaches for using technology in community engagement. After a brief overview of Generative AI, participants will brainstorm possible applications and analyze them through Neil Postman's "Five Things We Need to Know About Technological Change." Building on this reflection, they will use a "knot diagram" from Actor-Network Theory to identify, connect, and mobilize resources, networks, and technologies that can sustain mindful and equitable practices. Participants will leave with strategies and tools for approaching technological innovation with awareness, care, and purpose: aligning tools and infrastructures with the shared values that ground community engaged work.
