Description

This session presents research findings from a qualitative study exploring how students at a U.S.-Mexico border Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) perceive the value and impact of community-engaged high-impact practices (HIPs). Using Yosso's (2005) Community Cultural Wealth framework, the study highlights how students draw on their cultural assets—familial, navigational, and resistant capital—to find meaning, belonging, and empowerment through engagement. The presentation connects these insights to pedagogical strategies that value student knowledge and reshape engagement practices to be more inclusive and asset-based. Participants will learn how community engagement at HSIs can be reimagined to foster hope, unity, and social transformation through culturally responsive approaches.
