In this hands-on workshop, we'll explore an innovative assignment that replaces the traditional term paper or debate with a student-led deliberative dialogue. Designed to help students in an introductory class gain skills in information fluency, research, and communication, this assignment guides students through the process of researching a real-world problem that is relevant to their lived experience and future aspirations, interviewing experts, and crafting a deliberative dialogue issue guide that culminates in a facilitated dialogue with peers. The workshop provides participants with a framework that can be easily adapted for many types of classes to help students gain civic skills such as active-listening, perspective-taking, and information fluency.
