Democracy and civics are increasingly central to college and university dialogue in 2026, as we all grapple with the role of our institutions in the face of swirling sociopolitical issues. However, the areas of focus are not always inherently collaborative in nature – consider who you would consider the “leaders” of this work at your institution? Is it the staff person that oversees a student voting campaign? Is it a political science professor? A civic and leadership center? All of the above, plus others? How do we start to bring these varying perspectives and work strands into some collective vision that still allows for a wide-tent approach? We’ll discuss these issues and work to identify common questions and potential paths forward.
