For over ten years, the North Carolina Leadership Forum at Duke University has successfully facilitated discussions on timely topics characterized by significant disagreement. By engaging cohorts of statewide and local leaders from government, business, and nonprofit sectors, our innovative and deliberative dialogue model cultivates the will, skills, and relationships necessary for leaders to engage constructively across various divides, including ideology, identity, and urban-rural contexts. Our goal is to strengthen democracy by promoting a healthier policymaking environment. The program engages students by facilitating dialogues for student leaders and engaging students in support of the external program. Students observe and talk with policy leaders participating in constructive conversations. We will share lessons learned, our model, and plans for further campus engagement.
