Raúl D. Gutiérrez is a Professor of Latinx Studies and Spanish at Holyoke Community College. He also is the Learning Communities Program Coordinator at HCC. He teaches Latinx Studies and Spanish courses. HCC launched the Latinx Studies Program in 2019 and the Community Leadership Certificate, which he directs, in 2022. Raúl has conducted research on how to include community service, culturally responsive pedagogy, and antiracist pedagogy in classes. In 2019, he was selected as an Engaged Scholar for Campus Compact Eastern Region. In 2020, he received the Antonia Pantoja Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Achievement from the Latino Scholarship Fund of Western Massachusetts. Currently, he is the 2021 Marieb Chair, which is a Teaching Excellence Award, HCC's highest faculty honor. His areas of interest include community engagement and culturally responsive pedagogy in the academic setting and contemporary Latin American and Latino literature and film. He is especially interested in the cultural and artistic production in the Mexico-U.S. border. He is the advisor of the LEA Club (Latinx Empowerment Association). He holds Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is currently completing his PhD at UMass Amherst.
