This session focuses on successes and challenges in professionally developing and supervising graduate students in a community engagement office. The Ginsberg Center at University of Michigan employs graduate students to facilitate workshops, conduct scholarly research, write reports, staff outreach events, and more. But how do you deliver programming using graduate students who are at the same time learning and developing their own skills and knowledge in that exact area? The case study of Ginsberg’s Engaged Learning Graduate Consultant program offers a number of experiments we’ve tried over the years - both successful and unsuccessful - and the conversation will include specific questions that invite participants to share ways they have successfully used graduate students to extend the reach of their own office’s CE work. Participants will leave with example approaches to working with graduate students and information about what has and hasn’t worked at other institutions.
