Participants will learn about and brainstorm ideas to improve, sustain, and replicate in their own communities, a human rights education (HRE) and civic engagement program at the University of Connecticut, Human Rights Close to Home (HRCH). HRCH’s goal is to encourage civic action to strengthen democracy and respect for human rights in Connecticut communities and beyond. HRCH is a yearlong program where K-12 educators and high school students learn together and from each other and local experts. Teacher fellows are supported by UConn faculty and staff in planning and integrating human rights and civic engagement lessons in their classrooms. Student fellows are supported by UConn student mentors in planning and implementing a yearlong civic engagement project with real world impact.
