Over the last four years, faculty and staff at St. Catherine University have worked together to reimagine the university’s core curriculum, aiming for students and instructors to experience a deeper understanding of our mission to “educate women to lead and influence” with an emphasis on social justice leadership. All undergraduate students–traditional undergraduates as well as adult, online learners–now have an introductory community-engaged learning experience as part of the first-year course The Reflective Woman. We have also begun to embed deeper community engagement into another core course, The Global Search for Justice. In this session, we will share our model for scaffolding social justice education and community-engaged learning across the curriculum and reflect on the benefits and challenges of this approach.
