The STRIPES program at Belmont Charter High School in Philadelphia is a place-based initiative for 9th to 11th graders, aimed at enhancing high school graduation rates. Launched in January 2021, STRIPES (STudying Real Issues, Places, and ExperienceS) combines academic credits with experiential learning, emphasizing community connection. The program features two electives: "Exploring Parkside" and "Designing Parkside," promoting collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Evaluations in partnership with STEMSpark indicate STRIPES effectively fosters student agency and self-knowledge, with significant growth observed in participants. The culturally responsive curriculum integrates diverse perspectives, empowering students to connect personal narratives to broader historical contexts and become active, informed citizens.
