The Bentley Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center (BSLCE) is one of the longest standing and largest service-learning programs in the nation. Reviewing survey data from over 500 student participants, this session explores four foundational practices for high-impact service-learning: 1) community engagement grounded in reciprocity, 2) iterative reflection, 3) relational experiential learning, and 4) adaptive, responsive learning systems. While many institutions now prioritize anti-bias initiatives, we argue that service-learning is a powerful intervention, advancing beyond anti-bias training to pedagogy that explores anti-oppression practice. Service-learning is critical, both in encouraging awareness of equity and justice-based social issues, and in providing students with experiential opportunities that empower them to become collaborative changemakers within social impact organizations and social movements.
