This roundtable discussion invites discussion and collaborative problem-solving aimed at maintaining interest and momentum around democratic engagement during off-year elections.. “Off year” election cycles (years when the presidency is not on the ballot) pose particular challenges for campus-based civic and democratic engagement efforts. These elections are consequential but receive less attention and fewer resources from institutions of higher education and the broader public. Representatives from the University of Michigan’s Ginsberg Center will offer an overview of common challenges, suggest some potentially creative and effective approaches, and then facilitate a semi-structured discussion inviting other participants to share how their institution does (or could) encourage democratic engagement during off-year election cycles.
