This session explores the formation and implementation of guiding principles for community engagement that foster authentic, mutually beneficial partnerships between communities and higher education institutions. Drawing on experiences from Johns Hopkins University, we will discuss how these principles ensure accountability, center community voices, and advance social justice. Attendees will learn practical strategies for advocating for and organizing the development of principles within their own institutions, empowering them to move beyond transactional relationships toward transformational partnerships. The session will offer insights into building partnerships that reflect the priorities, strengths and needs of both communities and institutions, ensuring sustainable and impactful engagement.
