In 2023 a new director was appointed for the community engagement classification. Part of her responsibilities was reviewing and revising the application framework in order to address two questions. First, why are there relatively few HBCU, MSI’s and two-year institutions applying for and receiving classification given their historic and ongoing commitments to communities? Second, how can the application be streamlined to increase feasibility and efficiency for all applicants, given ongoing concerns from past, current, and potential applicants about the amount of effort and resources required for completion. This session outlines the principles and practical actions utilized to shape a rapid, inclusive, and comprehensive feedback process, as well as provide transparency into the process that shaped the 2026 application revisions.
