We aim to increase support for community engaged mothers in higher education, build upon research about the impact of motherhood on career development, and explore themes from our book, Reframing Community Engagement in Higher Education. Participants will engage in discussion, theme generation, and coalition building regarding the effects of motherhood on faculty, staff, and administrators working in higher education community engagement. Negative effects of motherhood on women’s careers are well documented; mothers receive lower pay, fewer promotions, and lower perceptions of competence. Scant attention has been paid to the unique skills offered by mothers in the workforce. This session will explore the tensions and benefits of motherhood on women’s career development in higher education community engagement and identify advocacy goals.
