Speaker Bio
Florencia Rojo completed her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of California, San Francisco. Informed by her training as a medical sociologist and her work with immigrant families and communities of color, her three primary areas of teaching-scholarship are im/migration, violence, and community-based research. In each intersecting domain, she considers how research—as a language of power—can be used to challenge dominant power relations. She works with academics and non-academics, traditional and lay experts alike, as equal research collaborators. Her teaching approach bridges scholarship and social justice work through critical community-engaged pedagogies. She is currently conducting a participatory action research project on food justice with youth and adult community collaborators from Colorado Springs.
