This session will introduce Indiana University Bloomington’s Advocates for Community Engagement Program as a model for successful integration of students into service-learning and community spaces. As part of the Cox Scholarship, ACEs are undergraduate students who work as part-time staff at nonprofit organizations and government offices to help facilitate service-learning classes. As intermediaries, ACEs help foster strong relationships between service-learners, instructors, and community partners. We will start with a brief history of the program, its current configuration, examples of partnerships, and the benefits and challenges of our model. The session aims to not only provide information about the program but also help participants envision new ways to engage undergraduates in service-learning and community-engaged learning.
