Since spring 2017, first-year student-athletes in Mercer University’s LSK 186, a required life skills course, have participated in service learning. With nearly 130 students enrolled in the class each spring, Mercer Athletics and the Center for Engaged Learning work in concert to refine and deliver a service-learning curriculum that empowers our athletes to consider their roles in the Macon community and at Mercer. This presentation explores the LSK 186 course design, offers insight into critical reflection strategies, and shares lessons learned from embedding service-learning engagement in a highly individualized course.
