Description
Inequities are part of a complex, deeply rooted legacy of oppression and discrimination that continues to permeate all facets of society. One way that many have attempted with some success to address these inequities is through community engagement. For many years, most of our campuses have utilized the same models of engagement, which are usually some combination of episodic service events, extracurricular service opportunities, or loosely defined service-learning. These methods of engagement prevent us from developing authentic relationships and foster behaviors of white saviorism. It is time to advance the way we engage with our community-at-large by incorporating lived experiences and centering community members as co-educators.
