Drawing from critical race theory, intercultural communication theory, and social constructivism, the session objective is to explore how to deconstruct normative views of academic-based community engagement and reconstruct a new pedagogical and programmatic paradigm of critical service-learning. Specifically, the equity-centered principles of justice, solidarity, and advocacy will be operationalized with specific evidence-based and best-practice strategies in explicating a new conceptual model to guide higher education professionals and faculty in their creation of curricular and co-curricular service-learning activities, partnerships, collaborations, assessment, and scholarship whether in-person or on-line. Participants will leave the session with new equity-centered community engagement techniques that can be immediately adapted at their own organizations.
